海洋経済価値計算
もし世界の海洋を国家経済で換算すると、どのくらいの価値があるのでしょうか。２０１５年５月の世界自然保護基金（ＷＷＦ）の試算によると、およそ２４兆ドル、世界で７番目の経済国に等しいそうです。この試算は、ボストン・コンサルティング団体とオーストラリアのグローバル・チェンジ・インスティチュツの共同研究です。このレポートの目的は政治家や経済界の指導者に一般的な投資対象として海洋を見て欲しいということなのです。自然資本として金銭感覚で査定していこうとするものです。ただし、どのくらい正確に把握できるのかという疑問は残っています。しかも私達を生かしてもらっている母なる海を金銭的価値観で評価するのもいかがなものかといった議論もあります。調査結果は特筆すべきものですが、人類や他の生き物にとって海洋はかけがえのないものであると私は考えています。
If the world’s seas and oceans were a national economy, how much would they be worth?
They are around $24 trillion according to the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) in a report on May 2015, making it the world’s seventh largest economy. The group drew up the research with the help of the Boston Consulting Group and the Global Change Institute in Australia.
The report aims to make policy makers and business leaders view the sea as a common investment. This technique of auditing nature in financial terms is known as “natural capital”. It has been used extensively in global health checks. However, there are questions as to how accurate such figures can be when applied to nature, and calculated on this grand scale.
Furthermore, is monetary value really the best way to measure nature’s importance to the planet, and the environment that sustains us? The study is noteworthy, but the oceans make up 70 percent of the Earth’s surface world so they are definitely the mother of this earth. I believe it is immeasurable and indispensable for all human beings and living creatures.
